How To Get Better Search Engine Rankings For Your Website: Meta-Tags

Every now and then someone will ask me, “How do I get better rankings for my website?”

Well you could write a book on that subject. Actually I did, here’s a link to it:

“Insider Secrets: How to Sell High Priced Products And Services Online” (http://www.affluentclients.com/book.htm)

(I can’t believe this guy threw in a shameless plug only three sentences into his blog post)

But seriously, one of the quickest and easiest ways for you to increase your website rankings is to fix your website meta-tags.

In case you don’t know what meta-tags are, they are tags in your website html source code that are generally at the top of the page and they identify what the webpage is about.

A lot of people aren’t aware of meta-tags and they just leave them blank. This is a mistake.

A good idea is to do some research and find out what the popular search query keywords are in your market. You can then put some of these keywords in your meta-tags.

Here is a free keyword research tool from Google that you can use:

You can type in various keywords for your market that you think might be popular. Then you can compare the popularity of the different keywords. The tool will also most likely give you some keyword ideas you had not thought of on your own.

You should also keep in mind which keywords you think might be more profitable for you in general (you know what your bestsellers are).

You can take a look at your website source code by moving your mouse to the right hand side of the screen of your website. You can then right-click on the screen and choose the option “View Page Source”.

If that doesn’t work, you can try going up to your browser “Tools” menu and choose “Web Developer > Page Source”.

This should show you your HTML website page source.

You can save this page to your computer.

You can then modify your meta-tags in a HTML editor like Coffee Cup.

You can then upload or FTP the page back up to your website host with a program like FileZilla.

Many people make the mistake of having the exact same meta-tags on all the pages on their website.

Every page of your website should have its own unique meta-tags with unique keywords. This way the search engines have a better idea of understanding what the different pages of your website are about.

Updating your meta-tag keywords can be a quick and simple way to help your website’s search engine rankings.  It may give you an edge over some of your competitors.

There are many other techniques that may be necessary in more competitive markets, but this is a good place to start.
